Biography

Birth: Clemens Theodore LESKE was born on 24 September 1923 in Rainbow, Victoria, Australia. Father Gotthold Adolph LESKE. Mother Alma TEPPER.

Early Career: "New Piano Teacher For Adelaide Mr. Clemens Leske, 26, whose appointment to the staff of the Elder Conservatorium was announced by the University yesterday, is a brilliant young Australian pianist who has just returned from Europe. He obtained first class honors in his Diploma of Music at the Paris Conservatoire last year, having graduated as a Bachelor of Music at Melbourne University in 1946. Mr. Leske studied in Paris under Marcel Ciampi, to whom he was introduced by Hephzibah Menuhin, a former pupil now living in Australia. Born at Rainbow, Victoria, Mr. Leske began serious study of the piano with Mr. Lindsay Biggins at Wesley College. His University course was interrupted by 3 years in the Army during the war. Later he taught at the Melbourne Conservatorium and at Scotch College, Melbourne. In 1947 he won a place in an ABC Concerto Competition in Melbourne, and then went to London, where he met a number of leading musicians and played for the Arts Council before crossing to Paris to begin his course there under Ciampi. As well as teaching at the Conservatorium, where he will begin today. Mr. Leske will be heard in solo recitals. " (3.1) 1950.

Later career: "Clemens Leske senior made his concert debut with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra in 1947 and has been soloist with symphony orchestras throughout Australia and in the United States. His educational, artistic and administrative contribution to the Elder Conservatorium also continued until 1998 with many of Australia's most distinguished pianist among his pupils.

A graduate of New York’s Juilliard School, Clemens Leske junior has performed with all Australian symphony orchestras and in Spain, the United Kingdom, Singapore, New Zealand, Hungary and China. He has appeared regularly with the Australian String Quartet, the Australian Chamber Orchestra and the Moscow Virtuosi. For his London Royal Festival Hall debut, he performed Rachmaninoff’s first piano concerto with the London Philharmonic Orchestra.

He has served on juries for national and international piano competitions, including the ABC’s Young Performers’ Awards, the Lev Vlassenko Piano Competition and the Australian National Piano Award. He became a senior lecturer in piano at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music." (4)

Dedicated Christian, Dean of the faculty, AM, international concert pianist, Associate Professor, dignity, fantastic sense of humour, humility and compassion, intellectual brilliance, AFL and cricket devotee. We love you forever. The family of Clemens invite you to attend a celebration of his life to be held in the Magnolia Chapel of the Macquarie Park Cemetery on Wednesday July 17, 2019 at 11am. A private burial will be held." (5)

Pers. com. As a young child fearfully facing my first AMEB piano examination in Angaston, South Australia, I was honored to have Mr. Clemens LESKE as my examiner. His reassuring commentary and calm nature dispelled all fears and encouraged my life long interest and involvement with serious music (Ed Noack, 14 November 2021).
